Description
TextNow is a US-focused communication app and MVNO wireless service with over 100 million users, positioning itself as the only free phone service that offers unlimited nationwide talk and text plus 5G data coverage starting at $0/month. Once you download the app, you can immediately get a free local US phone number—or port in your existing number—and start making free voice calls, direct messages, SMS, plus picture and video messaging within the US and Canada over Wi-Fi. If you insert a TextNow SIM card or activate a free eSIM (available on iOS/Android), your number also works on nationwide 4G LTE/5G networks for cellular talk, text, and essential data without needing Wi-Fi, making it suitable as a primary low-cost line, a secondary business line, or a side-hustle number.
Features
1. The "Free" Factor and Flexibility: The most compelling aspect of TextNow is its pricing model—or lack thereof. Unlike traditional carriers that lock you into rigid contracts, TextNow offers nationwide coverage for calls and texts at $0/month.
2. From "Free Flex" to Unlimited: TextNow distinguishes itself by being the first provider to offer data completely for free through its Free Flex Plan. This is a game-changer for users who need connectivity but don't want to pay for a full data package.
3. The Ultimate Second Line: For professionals, side-hustlers, or anyone valuing privacy, TextNow serves as an excellent second phone number.
4. International Connectivity: While the core service focuses on the US and Canada (offering free calls to both), TextNow is also a strong tool for international communication. It offers low-cost calling rates to over 230 countries, with rates starting at less than $0.01 per minute.
Review
The core experience is really great for $0/month. SMS in bounds and out, voice calls rang through reliably on a stable home Wi-Fi line, and the interface (contacts; conversation threads; voicemail with transcription) felt more like your standard dialer app than an overly primitive VoIP tool. Intuitive functionality — Sending/receiving texts seamlessly between phone and desktop worked well for us, especially at your desk where you don't want to pick up the handset.
International calling stayed strong too: calls to Canada were free, and users are able to make decent-sounding yet low-cost calls into Europe for less than $0.01/minute. For all users, there are also some nice features like voicemail transcription for recording voicemails to text rather than audio files and customizable tones or the home-screen widget. You can use multiple devices for operation, passcode lock and quick reply help you with daily operation.
The ad-supported model has certainly two sides to it. Unless you're living off the fumes of a dream, you can expect full-screen ads after multiple calls and between message threads on free versions; these are not little banners (that aren't subtle at all), but instead are interruptions in your flow-- think about making back-to-back calls for work.
Ultimately, TextNow did precisely what it promised: a real deal line for talk and text (and the most bare-minimum data), an actual secondary number—great for budget-conscious consumers as well as backups, side-hustles or those who live 100 percent over Wi-Fi—with no monthly bill just know in advance that ads VoIP verification restrictions and Altoona-style throttled roads after plan caps are part of the package.
