Review
MapQuest has delivered as a solid all-in-one navigation companion for both the city and country.
The turn-by-turn voice guidance is clear and well-timed, so you can just follow directions without looking back to the screen all too frequently. The traffic updates are actually helpful — the app redirects users around a snarl before users reach it and literally save minutes of time. It also seems like the routing is optimized for fuel economy, which could only be a worthy bonus during long drives.
Good clean map interface and up to date satellite photography should mean great visual context. One feature is the speedometer, prominently showing my current and posted speeds — a nice safety touch. Consider how much more convenient it's going to be with you being able to save Favorites (home, work, commonly visited locations) for everyday use.
For errand days, multipoint routes are a stand-out since they let users add multiple stops in one trip. Route settings (highway vs toll road avoidance) are also optional and work as expected. Doing so is especially useful for planning trips as users make use of it regularly by marker future routing within the app.
The layers bar makes it easy to find nearby restaurants, gas stations and hotels. Users can use the gas price comparison bank on longer drives without blowing through data cap and it saves money, not to mention that new OpenTable integration with GrubHub connection screened both reservations. A nice feature that touches on is local weather overlay for planning departure times.
Despite being one of the best apps in North America, coverage elsewhere is very thin. Voices prompts may be a bit sluggish in dense cities between high buildings. Some even say the interface is not as sleek compared to newer competitors.
MapQuest is still offering a powerful practical tool for drivers and pedestrians. With its mix of powerful navigation, money-saving tools and lifestyle features, it is like an all-in-one travel assistant rather than just a GPS app.
