Discord was originally made for game players, but it has become a platform anyone can use to form communities: book clubs, coding groups art collectives music fans even remote work teams. An interface that is clean, modern and customizable. Voice chat is good, latency-free and the overall video chat (screen-share inclusive) feature performs exemplary even on moderate internet.
The layout for the server system is fairly user-friendly — users can either create a server or join one that many others have created, and those servers are broken down even further into text and voice channels. That structure allows memories to be organized by topic or activity effortlessly. A study group server, for instance, may further split text channels into "announcements", "general discussion", and "resource sharing" while having voice channel categories for quiet study or group tutoring.
One more unique aspect is that it can provide permission based on role. Server admins can also assign you to a role (admin, moderator, member or guest) which determine what channels that you have access too read and write in as well speaking. This is incredibly helpful for keeping large communities in check.
To our pleasant surprise, the mobile app version (for iOS and + Android) is bolstered. It captures almost all desktop features — calls run in the background, notifications are instant and the interface scales nicely to smaller displays. Keep in mind that desktop is a lot more well suited to managing intricate server settings or typing lengthy messages.
Two small quirks are the app is resource heavy on older phones and it may seem complicated to a new user at first (lots of roles, bots & server settings).
