YouTube (the web-based video sharing and social media website) is a San Bruno, California-based subsidiary of Google. Founded in February of 2005 by three ex-PayPal employees, Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim — would be bought by Google for $1.65 billion as soon as November 2006. YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate and comment on videos including music clips, short films or blogs (meaning "video diaries"), how-to guides and film trailers as well as live streams but also much educational content. It is the second most visited website in the world, and a primary source of news/information/entertainment on the web.

2. Subscription System: Users can follow channels to be informed if the creator publishes new content.

5. Creators Monetization: It allows creators to make money from ads, channel memberships, Super Stickers and revenue generated through Youtube Premium for them via the YouTube partner program.

YouTube is huge in terms of video platform, it plays a major role both on content production as well consumption level. The recommendation algorithm is incredibly effective at finding appropriate videos, from professional educational courses to niche hobbies. The platform democratizes knowledge in an effective manner, enabling easy learnings and acquiring new skills for free. Moreover, the monetization system is well built-in and has backed a lively creator economy enabling millions to turn their creativity into work.

But the user experience has come under fire, with ads becoming increasingly intrusive as well. Free-tier users complain about seeing an overwhelming number of ads that they cannot skip during viewing and aggressive advertisement for YouTube Premium. They also often complain about performance issues like crashes, drained battery after updates and pain in their playback experience with Siri. And the emphasis on "Shorts" has watered down this approach to valuable long form content, while copyright claim disputes remain a sore spot for creators.

YouTube has some disadvantages but is still an important thing to modern living that no other medium or channel currently matches the variety it offers. The free version is filled with ads, but a Premium subscription removes the interruptions and allows background play. It remains the most complete place on earth, a balance between immense utility and still working through its user satisfaction challenge for those looking to find information or entertainment, or just their words in public.
